Varlin, Eugène
(1839-1871)
   revolutionary
   Born in Claye-Souilly, Eugène Varlin worked as a bookbinder and served as secretary-general of the French section of the International Association of Workers (First International, 1865). He sought to organize the workers' struggle and supported the strikes at Creusot and Roubaix (1870). A member of the Central Committee of the National Guard, where he represented the Workers Association, he was elected to the Paris commune as a representative for the sixth, 12th, and 18th arrondissements, and was named to the finance, then the supplies commissions. Varlin was shot by the troops sent from Versailles on May 28, 1871.
